CHANCELLOR’S 3 THINGS TO KNOW
May is typically a time of great celebrations across our university, featuring our graduating students and their proud families. While there is nothing typical about this time as COVID-19 continues to reshape our world, we are grateful to be a strong community with so many merits to honor and celebrate right now. In light of that, here are your top 3 Things to Know this May:
Celebrating Graduates: While we have postponed our in-person 2020 Commencement ceremony until it is safe for us to gather, we hosted a live, virtual celebration of this graduating class on Saturday, May 9. We had 18,141 joined us live on Saturday and an additional 4,000-plus have watched it on YouTube since! What a wonderful opportunity to mark this special occasion, partake in a virtual tassel turn and hear words of wisdom from Provost Wilkin, senior class president Cole Blue and Alumni Association president Matt Lusco.
Celebrating Achievements: In this age of social distancing, we’ve had to get creative to honor achievements that are a highlight for our university community every spring, including our Frist Award winners. I hope you can check out the 77th annual Honors and Awards Convocation list, the Commencement awards and honors page and our Merit Pages, which highlight the academic awards and accomplishments of each of our graduates. You should also check out the truly inspiring collection of profiles of graduating students at our Journey to Commencement website. All of these awards and stories illustrate the enthusiasm, excellence and contributions to society that we recognize as the Ole Miss spirit.
Celebrating Excellence: In a jaw-dropping achievement, six students from The Patterson School of Accountancy are winners of this year’s Elijah Watt Sells Award, the most prestigious CPA exam award given worldwide. Less than two-tenths of one percent received the award this year, for a total of 137 worldwide out of more than 75,000 candidates who took the test. Ole Miss ranks second in the nation for the number of Sells recipients this year, behind only the University of Texas at Austin. This resounding achievement is another mark of distinction for the Patterson School of Accountancy, known throughout the nation as a leader in its profession.
Until next month, stay safe and stay well!
