Welcome to the January edition of @ The Flagship! The spring semester is here, and we’re looking forward to celebrating many of our hallmark spring events and keeping our campus community connected and energetic. Be sure to check out the Top Stories, Flagship Facts and Looking Ahead sections below. Now, here are 3 Things to Know right now:
- New Senior Leaders: Following national searches, we’ve made two exceptional leadership hires. First, we’re pleased to welcome home Ole Miss alumnus Steven Holley as our new Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance. Steven brings more than 25 years of expertise from a career spanning positions with a Big 4 public accounting firm, large corporations and higher education institutions. I’m also excited to share that Eduardo Prieto will serve as our first Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management. With more than 20 years of higher education experience and expertise, Eduardo brings seasoned leadership and energy to infuse new approaches and strategies to how we recruit the next generation of students.
- Welcome Back Students: We were so pleased to welcome our students back this week, including nearly 250 new students in our university community. An early read shows that we are tracking at or above last year’s retention of first-year students returning from Fall 2020 to Spring 2021. This is due to the incredible work of our faculty and staff and their commitment to providing our students with the best possible college experience during these extraordinary times.
- 20 for ’20: Did you know that UM English Professor Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s non-fiction book “World of Wonders” was named the national 2020 Book of the Year by Barnes & Noble? That’s just one bright spot from our 20 for ’20 list highlighting some of the University’s greatest achievements of 2020. Here’s another: For the ninth consecutive year, UM private giving exceeded $100 million, thanks to your generosity. Or, how about the Center for Telehealth at UMMC using a $1 million federal grant to speed expansion of services to meet the changing needs of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic? In a year marked by upheaval and unprecedented challenges, our community celebrated some soaring achievements!

Filling the Need for Nurses
UMMC is celebrating its largest-ever Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing class, with 70 students at UMMC and another 60 at UM in Oxford. The fast-paced program immerses students from a variety of educational backgrounds into a 12-month program, allowing them to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and take the National Council Licensure Examination, which grants the Registered Nurse license.
On a Global Stage
Carolyn Freiwald’s talk on “The Story of Human Migration: Your Life in a Tooth,” will be broadcast to the world Feb. 12 through the global feed of the popular thought-leadership platform TED. Freiwald, associate professor of anthropology, delivered her remarks originally during the university’s TEDx University of Mississippi 2020 event. Her remarks focus on how archaeologists are using new technologies to discover just how common migration was around the world.
High Hopes for Men’s Tennis
To begin the 2021 season, the Ole Miss Rebels are No. 17 in the Oracle/ITA Preseason 2021 Men’s Tennis Rankings. Two seniors, Tim Sandkaulen and Finn Reynolds, were voted the No. 7 doubles tandem in the country and are the highest-ranked doubles duo among SEC programs.
