Text reads: ''Ole Miss on the Rise.'' Illustration of column. UM crest and ''@ The Flagship, December 2022''

This past year graced our university with exceptional achievements, and one thing is clear: Ole Miss is on the rise! Our successes — and our future growth — spring from the deep dedication, contributions, and belief of our entire university family. Read on for some of the many ways that talent and excellence define the University of Mississippi.

Hotty Toddy and best wishes for a joyful holiday season and a happy new year!

Glenn F. Boyce
Chancellor

Largest Freshman Class; Fall 2022; 4,480

Enrollment Flourishing

We are serving a larger student body, including more students from Mississippi. Overall enrollment grew 5.1% this year, and the university welcomed its largest-ever freshman class of 4,480 students. These numbers buck national trends, and we expect to grow again next year.

Freshman Retention Rate Highest in Ole Miss History

Students Staying on Track

This year, our retention rate for first-year students reached a record high 89.3%, well above state and national averages. This record reflects our ability to attract new students as well as support those who already call Ole Miss home.

Best Job Placement in Mississippi; 91% Employment Rate after 10 years; *Zippia

Building Professional Legacies

The university’s six-year graduation rate is 68.4%, 10 points higher than Mississippi’s overall rate and higher than national averages. Once they enter the workplace, our grads are the best in the state at finding employment and keeping it with a 91.4% rate of employment 10 years after graduation.

Seizing Student Accolades

Our students received exceptional awards that reflect their talents and offer opportunities to make valuable contributions to society. We celebrated three Goldwater Scholars, six Fulbright recipients (the highest number ever at Ole Miss), one Boren Scholar, one Rangel Fellow, and two Truman Scholars (only six universities nationwide had multiple Truman Scholars this year).

STEM Taking Center Stage

Our brand new Jim and Thomas Duff Center for Science and Technology Innovation is more than halfway complete and on track to open in fall 2024. The building will be one of the nation’s transformational facilities for STEM education.

Now & Ever; The Campaign for Ole Miss

Growing Resources

We are well beyond the $1.2 billion mark toward our $1.5 billion goal for the Now & Ever campaign, the largest fundraising campaign in the history of Mississippi universities. Helping reach this milestone, supporters gave more than $150.6 million in gifts during the university’s 2022 fiscal year. One of these commitments close to our hearts is the $3.5 million dedicated to build a new marching band practice field for The Pride of the South to support the spirit and enthusiasm that the band’s 300-plus members inspire!

Top Ranked University in Mississippi; Top 10% public university in the U.S. *U.S. News & World Report

Staying on Top

The University of Mississippi is the top-ranked university in Mississippi and among the top 10% of public universities in the nation, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The ranking also places us in the top 6% nationally for best value and tops in the state for veteran support programs.

Contributing to the Greater Good

Our faculty and researchers make amazing contributions to Mississippi, the scientific community, and society at large. One research project funded by the National Institutes of Health is examining cytoskeletal diseases such as cancer and heart disease. A grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse supports research seeking to reduce HIV-related pain through cannabis. And, the American Cancer Society is funding a study for new treatments for metastatic breast cancer.

60 Years of Integration; Building Upon The Legacy ;The University of Mississippi

Making History

In commemorating the 60th anniversary of the university’s integration, we honored distinguished alumnus James Meredith and his family during an inspiring week of programs and events. We also celebrated big anniversaries marking the founding of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College (25 years) and the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts (20 years).

Caring for Mississippi

Our University of Mississippi Medical Center leads the way in creating a healthier Mississippi. A $3 million gift to Children’s of Mississippi will help UMMC make the most advanced cleft and craniofacial treatment available to Mississippi’s children. More Mississippi students will have access to telehealth providers from UMMC, thanks to a $17.6 million grant from the state Department of Education. And, the UMMC School of Nursing plays a vital role in supplying our state with nurses and is ranked No. 67 out of more than 650 programs by U.S. News and World Report.

Rebelthon $1M; Over 10 Years

Serving Communities

Ole Miss students are driven to support their community and serve others. A record number of participating students raised more than $225,000 at the 10th annual RebelTHON, a 12-hour danceathon benefiting Children’s of Mississippi. A month later, more than 1,000 students participated in the Big Event, our universitywide day of service, offering hands-on help throughout the Lafayette-Oxford-University community.

Ole Miss National Champions 2022; NCAA Baseball

Rebs Are Hot

What a roller-coaster season for our Ole Miss baseball team that was defined by resilience and culminated with a defining moment in Omaha: the university’s first-ever men’s NCAA team title. And, for the second straight season, Ole Miss Athletics earned a program-record finish in the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings at 20th place. Our student-athletes are performing tremendously on and off the field as Ole Miss Athletics achieved a record-high Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 88 percent in 2022.

CHANCELLOR’S 3 THINGS TO KNOW

November has been a whirlwind at Mississippi’s flagship university. We welcomed renowned industry and government leaders and the SEC Nation television show to our campus, traveled across Texas to meet with prospective students during the inaugural Hotty Toddy Tour/Academic Roadshow, and enjoyed a visit with the youngest students on our campus — the preschoolers at our Willie Price Lab School. Here are three things to know right now:
  • ENROLLMENT ON THE RISE. The official numbers are in: Our total enrollment grew 5.1% this year, and we welcomed our largest freshman class ever this fall! The numbers buck national trends, and we were the only university in the state to experience growth. Thanks to a community-wide commitment, these great proof points illustrate our success in recruiting, retaining, and — most importantly — supporting our students on their journey of self-discovery. The word is out that Ole Miss offers academic excellence, dynamic experiences, and value. See the special section below for more exciting details.
  • WE HELP MISSISSIPPI COMPETE. More than 60 government and industry leaders gathered on our campus Nov. 8 for the second annual Mississippi Competes Vision Session, a conference focused on strengthening the state’s economic competitiveness. Bill Cook, venture partner at Columbia Capital, president of Cook Consulting LLC and an Ole Miss alum, pioneered the event to explore opportunities for the state’s advancement. We were grateful to be joined by U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson, state Sen. Nicole Boyd, and state Rep. Clay Deweese. Panelists included representatives from Black Sea Technologies, Butler Snow, Digital Infrastructure, Energize Colorado, Kodiak Robotics, Microsoft, Prysmian Group, Raytheon Technologies, Standvast, and TuSimple. We know this event sparked new ideas and opportunities while expressing our commitment to partner in Mississippi’s growth.
  • FIRST-GEN STUDENTS MATTER. Our first-generation students took center stage during First-Generation College Week (Nov. 7-10), which coincided with the national First-Generation College Celebration. Events included a keynote from author Jennifer Morton, a panel discussion featuring students, staff, and faculty, and more. I’m so grateful for our StudentsFIRST program, which gives first-generation students the academic and social support needed to be successful. Our first-gen students bring an important dynamic to our classrooms with their life experiences, and they are to be commended for their pursuit of life-changing opportunities.
I hope you enjoy a wonderful and joyful Thanksgiving with your loved ones.

CHANCELLOR’S 3 THINGS TO KNOW

Welcome to the October edition of @ The Flagship! This month, we celebrated Homecoming, hosted the staffs of Mississippi’s federal congressional delegation, and enjoyed a spectacular Harvest Supper in support of the UM Museum. Here are three things to know right now:
  • LIFE-CHANGING WORK: Our faculty makes amazing contributions to the greater good. Nikki Reinemann, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, recently received a $1.5M Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award from the NIH to fund research related to cytoskeletal diseases such as cancer and heart disease. This award is Dr. Reinemann’s second award this year! Or, consider the transformative work that our School of Applied Sciences is doing with the North Mississippi Literacy Project. Our students in Communication Sciences and Disorders receive training and experiential learning as they work with schools in Lafayette County and Oxford to implement a multi-sensory structured language program to teach children to read, write, and spell. The program has benefited more than 2,000 children and will soon reach more.

  • HOTTY TODDY: We will celebrate the 2022 baseball national championship Nov. 9-12 by honoring the team during the Alabama football game. We’ll also premiere “Belief,” a documentary film from Ole Miss Sports Productions that gives an unprecedented inside look into the title run. On Nov. 10, the team will travel to Jackson for a luncheon at the governor’s mansion and visit Children’s of Mississippi Hospital. What a great series of events to celebrate our national champs! You don’t have to wait ‘til spring to see the national champs in action. Catch the team’s final fall game Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. against the Blazers of UAB.

  • MANY HAPPY RETURNS: We’re celebrating major anniversaries this year! The Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program (METP), which was created to address the severe teacher shortage in Mississippi public schools, has been training high-performing teachers for 10 years. The Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts will mark its 20th anniversary throughout the year with a diverse slate of performances, an expanded offering for area school children, a book, and a spring gala featuring Mississippi celebrities and friends. Finally, the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College celebrates 25 years of cultivating academic excellence and outstanding student scholars. See the special section for highlights about this prized academic program.

Until next month, take care!

CHANCELLOR’S 3 THINGS TO KNOW

The fall semester is off to a great start in Oxford. Our Center for Manufacturing Excellence recently hosted the Mississippi Forge Forward Summit focused on workforce development and education for Mississippi’s defense industry. We honored the longtime generous support of the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation with the dedication of The Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union. Fall athletics are in full swing as well, including a 4-0 start for Ole Miss Football, the first time since 2015. With so much happening on campus, here are three things to know right now:
  • 60th Anniversary: In 1962, James Meredith became the first African American to enroll at the University of Mississippi, and this year we celebrate his leadership and the 60th anniversary of the university’s integration. Thanks to Dr. Shawnboda Mead, vice chancellor for diversity and community engagement, and with tremendous support from a special planning committee, the campus community has organized programs, events and projects throughout the 2022-23 academic year. We’re grateful to Mr. Meredith and his family for their presence at the commemoration’s signature event on Sept. 28, and we look forward to hearing from Mr. Meredith at that event. It is a humbling honor to thank him and reflect on the path of the university over the past 60 years. Please see the special section below for more information regarding the commemoration events.
  • Top University: The University of Mississippi remains the highest-ranking university in Mississippi and among the top 10% of public universities in the nation, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its “Best Colleges” 2022-23 report. UM ranks No. 72 among public universities and has been in the top 100 for 12 consecutive years. The university also ranked highest in the state for best value and veteran support programs, ranking No. 40 among public institutions in the “Best Value Schools” report and No. 68 among public universities for schools that make pursuing a college education more affordable for veterans and active-duty service members. These distinctions reflect our academic excellence and our commitment to student success.
  • Great People. Great University.: At Ole Miss, one of our top priorities is caring for our people. That’s why we’re thrilled to be recognized for the 13th time as a “Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The university was recognized in several categories, including faculty and staff well-being; diversity, inclusion and belonging; faculty experience; and shared governance. A thread connecting these categories is a commitment to treating one another with respect, fairness, civility, and kindness. I’m grateful to all members of the university community for contributing to the outstanding work environment that led to this achievement. You are what makes Ole Miss a great place to work!
And here’s a bonus item: Check out our university’s new television commercial that debuted earlier this month on the telecast of our football team’s win over Georgia Tech. It features many of our outstanding students and their hopes and dreams for the future.

Hope to see you on campus soon, and take care!

The university’s newest students gather to celebrate Fall Convocation on Aug. 23, 2022, @The Flagship, August 2022

CHANCELLOR’S 3 THINGS TO KNOW

With the start of a new academic year, our campus is bustling as new and returning students fill our residence halls, classrooms, libraries, common areas, and green spaces. The beginning of a new year also means our annual tradition of Fall Convocation. This year, we welcomed international bestselling author John Green, whose collection of essays “The Anthropocene Reviewed” is our Common Reading Experience text.

Here are three things to know right now:

FRESHMEN EVERYWHERE: We welcomed our largest-ever freshman class this fall! While final enrollment figures will be confirmed later this fall, this year’s class far surpasses the 2016 freshman class of 3,984 students. That’s a testament to all that our university offers, including a legacy of academic excellence, a beautiful campus in America’s best college town, myriad student success programs, and a commitment to provide unique opportunities that will define our students’ college experiences. It is also a testament to the team effort delivered by our staff to attract this amazing class, which is also one of the most academically prepared classes we’ve ever had. I’m thankful to everyone who contributed.

LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP: As a flagship university, we have an enduring legacy of inspiring and educating leaders — for the state of Mississippi and beyond. You see it in the halls of Mississippi government that are teeming with Ole Miss graduates who lead across the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Be sure to check out “A Legacy of Leadership,” which we published to honor and recognize the leadership, dedication, and contributions of our outstanding alumni who serve in state-level public service roles. We’re so grateful to them for advancing our state! That influence also extends to the halls of government in Washington. A recent LegiStorm analysis found the University of Mississippi is “a top undergraduate school for Republican staffers” on Capitol Hill.

NATIONAL CHAMPS: The Ole Miss baseball team is the reigning NCAA College World Series champion! I’m not sure we will ever grow tired of saying that. An army of Ole Miss fans descended on Omaha to witness a special and defining moment in our university’s history as we cheered on a resilient and talented team that won our university’s first-ever men’s NCAA team title. We are building a new legacy of winning as this win follows the Ole Miss women’s golf team’s NCAA national championship in 2021. It’s a great time to be an Ole Miss Rebel.

Until next month, take care!

CHANCELLOR’S 3 THINGS TO KNOW

We just completed an incredible academic year marked by unbridled enthusiasm and unprecedented triumphs. Our students produced outstanding academic achievements, including three Goldwater scholars, two Truman scholars, six Fulbright recipients, three NSF Graduate Research Fellows, one Boren Scholar, and one Rangel Scholar.
