December 15, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Uncategorized

Dear faculty and staff,

The fall semester has drawn to a close, and once again, we have many successes to celebrate. As we anticipate the holiday break, I’m grateful for all the ways you excel, especially for your commitment to our students and your passion for higher education.

The University of Mississippi stands apart because of the vibrant connections within our community. You are the nexus for those connections.

  • You can see it in your contributions to our appeal as a college of choice, and in your ability to meet the needs of our growing community.
  • You can see it in the supportive work environment you have cultivated, a key factor leading to our “Great Colleges to Work For” designation for the 14th time.
  • And, you can see it in our enduring legacy of leadership in education, research, healthcare, and service that is now 175 years strong.

Spring is a special time on our campus, especially for how we will continue to build excellence, celebrate our students, and grow the connections that are foundational to our university. I’m thankful for everyone in our committed campus community as we work together to carry out the life-changing mission of our university. It is truly a special calling how we transform lives.

Emily and I extend our best wishes for a joyful holiday season!

Finish Strong, Enjoy the Holidays. Message from Chancellor Glenn F. Boyce.

December 1, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Uncategorized

Dear students,

We blinked, and somehow it is the last day of classes! While I know you are looking forward to the long break that awaits you in just a few days, now is not the time to lose focus. Rather, it is time to sprint strong to the finish before taking a well-deserved holiday break. Here is some guidance to successfully finish the semester, performing at your best.

Prepare for Finals: Finals Week can be challenging and stressful. Follow this simple advice: DON’T ‘WING’ IT. Prepare properly. Stay focused. Put in the time!

  • Check the finals schedule to confirm the date and time of your exams.
  • Contact your professors or consult your syllabi for information or clarifications.
  • Reach out to our dedicated, caring team at the University Counseling Center if you feel overwhelmed.

Take Study Breaks: Yes, there’s a lot to get done. Success requires balance, so practice self-care and stay tuned to your well-being. Exercise. Eat healthy. Get proper sleep. And, take periodic breaks — enjoy the festive sights and sounds on campus and in Oxford with your favorite people. It can ease some of the stress and reminds us of the importance of loved ones in our lives.

  • Check The Forumand Visit Oxford to find out what’s happening on campus and in the community.

Rest, Reconnect, & Recharge: Once you head home: Rest, reconnect and find time to celebrate with family and friends, and most importantly, recharge. Spring 2024 will be action-packed with our faculty and staff ready to deliver great classes, life-changing experiences, and outstanding student support.

  • Stay plugged into campus happenings — read The Powder Blue, the weekly email student newsletter, and follow the Ole Miss Student Hub on Instagram.

Study hard. Safe travels. And, have a joyful holiday season. Can’t wait to see you when our football team goes “bowling” or around campus next semester.

Hotty Toddy!

Chancellor’s Message on Veteran’s Day 2023

November 10, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Veteran’s Day serves as a time to celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their selfless service, courage, and patriotism. Their willingness to fight and sacrifice for our freedom and the defense of our great nation is inspiring. We’re especially grateful for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are veterans. On behalf of the entire Ole Miss family, I extend heartfelt gratitude to these heroes, our veterans — as well as their families — for all they do on behalf of our nation and its citizens.

Happy Anniversary! We’re Celebrating 175 Years of Excellence & Momentum

November 6, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Dear members of the university community,

Today is a wonderful, celebratory day in the life of the University of Mississippi. Our enduring legacy of academic excellence and serving our students, our state, and our future began on this day 175 years ago when we opened for our first session with 80 students.

We will mark this auspicious occasion today at 1 p.m. on the front steps of the Lyceum with remarks and a reception. Please join us — the 175th anniversary planning committee led by Provost Noel Wilkin has put together a fabulous celebration for our whole community to enjoy.

Today’s anniversary is more than commemorating the passage of time. Underlying nearly two centuries as our state’s flagship university is a foundation built on countless connections, paths, and threads that beckon people to this special, life-changing place and keeps them returning, generation after generation. For 175 years, our remarkable impact has been measured in terms of our greatest resource and our greatest product — our people — who carry this esteemed institution into the world.

To our current students: You have chosen this place to help shape and elevate you as the next generation of leaders and trailblazers. We can’t wait to see all that you will accomplish when you join the ranks of our respected graduates who govern, invent, heal, research, teach, engineer, build, solve, inspire, volunteer, create, innovate, and champion others.

To our faculty: Since 1848, one of our constants has been the excellence, talent, and dedication of our faculty. You are the foundation of our academic reputation, our research and creative prowess, and so much more. Because of you, students and families continue to embrace this university as a welcoming place to learn, grow, and excel. Thank you for pouring your knowledge and your hearts into how our students thrive with unwavering support and personal mentoring.

To our staff: Meaningful contributions that go above and beyond in service to our university continue to be the hallmark that defines you. Every day, I’m inspired by your tremendous work, your energy and positivity, and the extraordinary thought and attention you give to how we best serve our students. I’m honored to work alongside you!

To our alumni:  You will always be a vital part of this university’s past, present, and future. There are few places in this world that value the level of lifelong relationships like Ole Miss does. Our alumni are at the heart of how strong those connections remain, generation after generation. Through you, the Hotty Toddy spirit of Ole Miss is everywhere. And, through you, Ole Miss is moving the world forward and shaping a brighter future.

Yes, the University of Mississippi is a special place, but it is so much more than just a place. It is the wellspring of each of our dreams and legacies. It is a family. It is a community of scholars. And, it is where generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni come together to learn, grow, and make their mark on the world. We are connected across time and space, bound by a shared commitment to knowledge, progress, and the pursuit of excellence.

Thank you all for being a lasting part of the inspiring story of the University of Mississippi. Here’s to the next 175 years of excellence, innovation, and changing lives.

Happy Anniversary!

Hotty Toddy and welcome to a new year at Ole Miss!

August 21, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Dear students,

Hotty Toddy and welcome to a new year at Ole Miss! On behalf of our professors, staff, and the Ole Miss community, we are all excited to see you here where you belong — on America’s most beautiful campus, in the greatest college town.

This fall is special for a couple of reasons. For the second straight year, we have a record number of first-year students! In addition, we are celebrating a milestone as the university marks its 175th anniversary since welcoming our inaugural class of 80 students on Nov. 6, 1848.

As we start a new academic year, I want to encourage you to make your well-being a priority by designing a support system that enables you to succeed academically. College is fun, and it can also be stressful. Keep in mind:

  • You have resources that are available and ready to support and guide you. The Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience can work with you to create a personalized plan for your success.
  • Our Counseling Center, Health Center and William Magee Center can help you maintain the good health and wellness that are vital to your success.
  • You have many ways to stay physically fit by using the South Campus Recreation Center, the Turner Center or the South Campus Rail Trail, where you can get outside and enjoy nature.

Check out the welcome letter from the Student Affairs team for more information about the resources available to you and important details about upcoming events and activities. I hope you will also seek out guidance from your professors, advisors, and student leaders — they are all in your corner and are here to help you be successful. Additionally, our entire university leadership team is invested in your bright future, and we’re eager to hear your thoughts and ideas.

To gain the most from all your years here at Ole Miss and grow your personal legacy, get involved, build relationships, and seize leadership opportunities. I challenge you to follow this advice, and I promise you that the year ahead will be an amazing journey. Are you ready?
