Welcome

Thanksgiving Message from Chancellor Boyce

November 17, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Dear students, faculty, and staff,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you’ll join me in a moment of gratitude for our vibrant university as this time of year reminds us to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives. Like you, I’m incredibly thankful to be a part of this amazing campus community.

  • I’m grateful for our dedicated faculty and staff, who go above and beyond to support our students’ growth and success.
  • I’m inspired by our students, who approach each day with enthusiasm, drive, big hearts, and big dreams for their futures.
  • And, I’m uplifted by all who share a commitment to our continued excellence in academics, research, student opportunities, and athletics.

My wish is that this Thanksgiving break provides you with rest, joy, and quality time with loved ones. It is an important season to remind ourselves to practice self-care, extend kindness, and cherish our connections. Be with your family and friends, find ways to give back or give to those who are less fortunate, and take time to recharge. You deserve it.

Rest up this week and prepare to finish the semester strong when you return from the holiday. Emily and I wish you a peaceful, healthy, and happy Thanksgiving!

Chancellor’s Message on Veteran’s Day 2023

November 10, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Veteran’s Day serves as a time to celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their selfless service, courage, and patriotism. Their willingness to fight and sacrifice for our freedom and the defense of our great nation is inspiring. We’re especially grateful for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are veterans. On behalf of the entire Ole Miss family, I extend heartfelt gratitude to these heroes, our veterans — as well as their families — for all they do on behalf of our nation and its citizens.

Happy Anniversary! We’re Celebrating 175 Years of Excellence & Momentum

November 6, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Dear members of the university community,

Today is a wonderful, celebratory day in the life of the University of Mississippi. Our enduring legacy of academic excellence and serving our students, our state, and our future began on this day 175 years ago when we opened for our first session with 80 students.

We will mark this auspicious occasion today at 1 p.m. on the front steps of the Lyceum with remarks and a reception. Please join us — the 175th anniversary planning committee led by Provost Noel Wilkin has put together a fabulous celebration for our whole community to enjoy.

Today’s anniversary is more than commemorating the passage of time. Underlying nearly two centuries as our state’s flagship university is a foundation built on countless connections, paths, and threads that beckon people to this special, life-changing place and keeps them returning, generation after generation. For 175 years, our remarkable impact has been measured in terms of our greatest resource and our greatest product — our people — who carry this esteemed institution into the world.

To our current students: You have chosen this place to help shape and elevate you as the next generation of leaders and trailblazers. We can’t wait to see all that you will accomplish when you join the ranks of our respected graduates who govern, invent, heal, research, teach, engineer, build, solve, inspire, volunteer, create, innovate, and champion others.

To our faculty: Since 1848, one of our constants has been the excellence, talent, and dedication of our faculty. You are the foundation of our academic reputation, our research and creative prowess, and so much more. Because of you, students and families continue to embrace this university as a welcoming place to learn, grow, and excel. Thank you for pouring your knowledge and your hearts into how our students thrive with unwavering support and personal mentoring.

To our staff: Meaningful contributions that go above and beyond in service to our university continue to be the hallmark that defines you. Every day, I’m inspired by your tremendous work, your energy and positivity, and the extraordinary thought and attention you give to how we best serve our students. I’m honored to work alongside you!

To our alumni:  You will always be a vital part of this university’s past, present, and future. There are few places in this world that value the level of lifelong relationships like Ole Miss does. Our alumni are at the heart of how strong those connections remain, generation after generation. Through you, the Hotty Toddy spirit of Ole Miss is everywhere. And, through you, Ole Miss is moving the world forward and shaping a brighter future.

Yes, the University of Mississippi is a special place, but it is so much more than just a place. It is the wellspring of each of our dreams and legacies. It is a family. It is a community of scholars. And, it is where generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni come together to learn, grow, and make their mark on the world. We are connected across time and space, bound by a shared commitment to knowledge, progress, and the pursuit of excellence.

Thank you all for being a lasting part of the inspiring story of the University of Mississippi. Here’s to the next 175 years of excellence, innovation, and changing lives.

Happy Anniversary!

CHANCELLOR’S 3 THINGS TO KNOW

Classes are underway, students are making new friends, and we can’t wait to get back to the Grove when football season kicks off Sept. 2! Check out the special section at the end of this newsletter for more dates to note this semester. Until then, we’ve got so much going on that instead of our customary three things, here are Five Things to Know Right Now:
  • Record Enrollment: We have a record-breaking first-year class for the second year running! Our current freshman class of more than 5,200 far exceeds last year’s 4,482 first-year students — a 17% year-over-year increase and a 46% increase over the past two years. In fact, this is the largest freshman class ever at a Mississippi university! While official numbers will be released in November, we’re excited about our overall enrollment increases, especially on the Oxford and regional campuses where we are on pace to surpass the university’s record-high enrollment reached in 2016. Growth is evident across key areas, including Mississippians, underrepresented groups, and legacies. Our trajectory is a testament to all that the university offers, reflects the strength of our student support programs, and demonstrates how students are choosing Ole Miss to build their personal legacies. And, the good news is forward-looking: we are double digits ahead of last year’s pace on Fall 2024 freshman applications!
  • Caution: Construction Ahead! Our growth isn’t limited to our newest first-year class. Watch for progress around our campus as we demolish Kincannon Hall to make way for three new residence halls, draw closer to the Fall 2024 opening of the Jim & Thomas Duff Center for Science and Technology (our largest-ever campus construction project), and open a new practice facility for The Pride of the South marching band. We’ve also completed the renovation and expansion of the Olivia and Archie Manning Athletics Performance Center. At the same time, we’re committed to keeping our campus community safe by increasing awareness of the urgent need to stay attentive at the wheel and in the crosswalk: eyes up, cross only at crosswalks, and Be Safe!
  • National Leaders: I’m grateful and proud of our exceptional faculty and researchers who engage in groundbreaking endeavors to enrich quality of life and tackle some of society’s most pressing challenges. One way we’re growing our prominence is through several new Centers and Institutes that are poised to become national powerhouses. These include the Center for Practical Ethics, the National Center for Narrative Intelligence, the Declaration of Independence Center, the National Center for Cannabis Research & Education, and more. I’m excited about these fantastic initiatives and the ways they empower our mission.
  • Fundraising Momentum: Over the past year, our collective efforts yielded more than $365 million in investments and funding for our university from private giving, state investments, and federal appropriations. In particular, our Now & Ever campaign is charging ahead with more than $1.39 billion raised toward our $1.5 billion overall goal. For the university’s 2023 fiscal year that ended June 30, our supporters donated more than $155.1 million in gifts — our second-highest fundraising year on record. The most exciting part is more than $66 million raised for academics, a record high. The university’s endowment now stands at $840 million. We would not be where we are today without the generosity of devoted alumni and friends. Thank you for bolstering our commitment to our students, teaching, research, and the high-quality health care, service, and innovation we contribute to the world!
  • 175 Years of Excellence & Momentum: As we celebrate our current momentum, we’re also taking a moment to celebrate our flagship legacy: The University of Mississippi opened its doors to students 175 years ago this fall on November 6, 1848. This milestone represents 175 years of delivering excellence in education, research, healthcare, and service. It demonstrates our tremendous staying power across generations. Thank you for being part of our story!
Until next month, take care!

Hotty Toddy and welcome to a new year at Ole Miss!

August 21, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Dear students,

Hotty Toddy and welcome to a new year at Ole Miss! On behalf of our professors, staff, and the Ole Miss community, we are all excited to see you here where you belong — on America’s most beautiful campus, in the greatest college town.

This fall is special for a couple of reasons. For the second straight year, we have a record number of first-year students! In addition, we are celebrating a milestone as the university marks its 175th anniversary since welcoming our inaugural class of 80 students on Nov. 6, 1848.

As we start a new academic year, I want to encourage you to make your well-being a priority by designing a support system that enables you to succeed academically. College is fun, and it can also be stressful. Keep in mind:

  • You have resources that are available and ready to support and guide you. The Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience can work with you to create a personalized plan for your success.
  • Our Counseling Center, Health Center and William Magee Center can help you maintain the good health and wellness that are vital to your success.
  • You have many ways to stay physically fit by using the South Campus Recreation Center, the Turner Center or the South Campus Rail Trail, where you can get outside and enjoy nature.

Check out the welcome letter from the Student Affairs team for more information about the resources available to you and important details about upcoming events and activities. I hope you will also seek out guidance from your professors, advisors, and student leaders — they are all in your corner and are here to help you be successful. Additionally, our entire university leadership team is invested in your bright future, and we’re eager to hear your thoughts and ideas.

To gain the most from all your years here at Ole Miss and grow your personal legacy, get involved, build relationships, and seize leadership opportunities. I challenge you to follow this advice, and I promise you that the year ahead will be an amazing journey. Are you ready?

Welcome to a new academic year!

August 18, 2023 Letters from the Chancellor, Welcome

Dear faculty and staff,

Welcome to a new year on America’s most beautiful campus! It is an exciting time at the University of Mississippi where, for the second year in a row, we are welcoming our largest freshman class ever. The significant growth in enrollment reflects our success in offering a vibrant, nurturing community and our appeal as a college of choice. I can’t wait to see how this new class makes its mark on Ole Miss.

I also recognize and appreciate that having more students requires greater investments in time, support, and guidance by our faculty, staff, and administration. I’m profoundly grateful for your commitment to our mission, and I’m inspired by how you encourage, uplift, and empower our students.

This fall, we will celebrate a major milestone as we mark 175 years of delivering education, research, healthcare, and service. Our longevity demonstrates the timeless value of our mission to provide access to higher education, prepare graduates for meaningful careers, and offer great value to our students and their families across generations.

The theme for the anniversary celebration, “A Legacy of Calling,” aligns with this year’s Common Reading Experience selection, “Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work” by Dave Isay. The book draws on Isay’s inspirational work as the founder of the StoryCorps oral history project, which he will discuss in his address to Fall Convocation in The SJB Pavilion on Tuesday, August 22 at 7 p.m. I encourage you to reflect on the moving and thoughtful vignettes in the book, and I hope you’ll join Convocation or some of the events to come later this fall.

While we have a history of making history at the University of Mississippi, I’m most proud of how we always look to the future. I’m excited about new programs, facilities, and talent that will debut this fall to advance our campus and grow our transformational impact.

Your tremendous level of achievement and remarkable dedication exemplifies our culture of caring and empowers our students to thrive, pursue passions, and build bright futures as critical thinkers and leaders. I look forward to another fantastic year together, and I wish you the best with your professional goals and ambitions.

Sincerely,

Glenn F. Boyce
