Dear faculty,
As COVID-19 continues to cause great uncertainty across our state, nation and world, you have demonstrated tremendous resilience, flexibility and extraordinary capability. There is no way to express enough gratitude for your commitment and outstanding efforts to support our students and their academic progress during this immensely challenging time. When the history of this event is written, your significant and selfless efforts will be remembered in not only how we responded and endured, but in how we will flourish when we come out on the other side of this.
On behalf of the university’s senior leadership team, we cannot express our appreciation deeply enough for the herculean efforts you have shown in modifying your classes to an online (or remote-based) setting. We are aware that you have made these efforts while also adjusting to the disruption that COVID-19 has caused in your personal lives. I’m particularly heartened by the sense of community that has permeated our efforts, especially how you have supported your colleagues and helped one another develop and implement modified course plans. Your service to each other and to your students is truly inspiring and reflects the greater mission we all believe in: to build a better world through higher education.
The University of Mississippi is a place that values caring and support. This has never been more evident than today. As you always do, I know you’ll remain attuned to our students’ health, mental well-being and safety during this time while also remaining committed to their academic success. In light of the numerous challenges and disruptions they are likely facing including potential economic uncertainties, we must stay aware of the big picture, be adaptable and do the best we can in unprecedented circumstances.
Again, I offer my sincerest appreciation for your commitment to our students. Your efforts are the backbone of the university’s success and are providing a sense of continuity and purpose in many lives. This university has weathered many challenges over the last 172 years, and this one will be no different. We will persist through it and be stronger for it.
